PESTILENCE WATCH:Malaria on the up in Moz

Maputo - Mozambique hospitals are dealing with more and more cases of malaria, the Health Ministry has revealed in its weekly epidemiology bulletin.
They treated 118 056 cases between April 8 and 14, when 36 people died, up from 81,594 the previous week, when there were 36 deaths, according to the report. It was expected that the number of reported cases would increase even more. The report noted that while the number of deaths had decreased, they were still well above the limit set by the national programme on the control of malaria. There were 6 227 719 cases of malaria reported in Mozambique in 2006, with 5 896 411 reported in 2005. In 2006, 4985 people died of malaria, 15.6% more than the 4209 deaths in 2005.
According to Unicef, malaria is the primary cause of ill health in Mozambique, accounting for 40% of out-patient consultations, 60% of paediatric in-patients and a third of hospital deaths.
