Lombardy President Insists Christians Must be Active in Politics and Public Life; Otherwise, They Betray Their Faith

(Moscow)—President Roberto Formigoni of the Italian province of Lombardy has stated that every Christian lay person must have an active position in society, as reported in Interfax. "The Christian person cannot be disinterested in politics. If the believer is indifferent to his neighborhood or to the society around him, he betrays his faith. The Christian must actively express his life position," said Formigoni while at the Spiritual Library cultural center in Moscow.
He reportedly disagreed that political involvement was incompatible with being Christian and said that the modern politics was not only for "dirty handed" people and is quoted as saying that modern European states' secular policies are not an obstacle, but rather help Christians to be involved in political life and run for leading positions. The very idea of secularism, he argues, "originates in the Christian tradition" when Jesus urged "to render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's."
"The secular state respects its every citizen's choice. Christian politicians guarantee that all choices are respected and freedom of those who have different worldviews are safeguarded," Formigoni said.
