According to an alert by Citizen Link, this Saturday—June 30th—Federal funding for abstinence education for states in the U.S., will expire. This means that abstinence education would no longer be provided in U.S. public schools.
Daniel Schneider, acting assistant secretary for the Department of Health & Human Services Administration for Children and Families, reportedly sent a letter to congressional leaders "imploring" them to reauthorize funding for the state abstinence-education programs."Sexual activity among teens has health, emotional and social consequences," asserted Schneider in the letter. "Nearly half of all new cases of sexually transmitted diseases occur among young people aged 15-24. Among teens, sexual activity is associated with depression, especially for girls. And youth who are sexually active are more likely to participate in other risky behaviors like drinking and using drugs."
