Baptist pastor calls preachers to fight for the truth

SAN ANTONIO - A pastor from California has told preachers at the opening session of the annual Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) meeting in the Alamo City that it's vital for them to contend for the faith.Speaking at the Pastor's Conference on Sunday, Dr. Roger Spradlin, senior pastor of Valley Baptist Church in Bakersfield, California, preached from the fourth chapter of II Timothy, when Paul told Timothy to keep his focus on Christ.Spradlin said pastors must have fellowship of friends and also a commitment to stay true to God's Word in order to finish well in their journey with Christ. Pastors, said Spradlin, have to be willing to fight post-modernism, which contends that truth is neither discovered nor revealed, but "created by society or worshipped by the individual"."We have to resist the pluralism of our culture that says you can come to God through Jesus -- but you can come through Buddha or Allah or any other way [too]," said the California pastor. "And yet Jesus said 'I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the father except through me.'"Spradlin said it is easy for pastors to get discouraged in ministry, but he said they must press on to leave a legacy for future generations. The 2007 SBC Annual Meeting continues through Wednesday, June 13, at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio, Texas.
